ODM cannot afford spokespersons who speak carelessly – Kasmuel to Sifuna

Kasmuel McOure has sharply criticized ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna for congratulating the Nanam Ward MCA-elect in Thursday’s by-elections.
In a statement released on Friday, November 28, McOure questioned whether Sifuna’s assertion represented the official party position, warning that such carelessness undermines the Broad-Based arrangement between ODM and the government.
“Should the public now take this as the official party position, that the ODM Party won Nanam Ward?” McOure asked, responding to Sifuna’s congratulatory message about the by-election results.
The controversy arose after Sifuna, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), congratulated the ODM team for delivering victories in several constituencies, including what he claimed was a win in Nanam Ward in Turkana West Constituency.
“Congratulations to the entire ODM team that delivered wins for Boyd Were in Kasipul, Moses Omondi in Ugunja, Harry Kombe in Magarini and the MCA seat in Nanam Ward in Turkana West Constituency. Well done!” Sifuna wrote.
However, the Nanam Ward seat was actually won by the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), which congratulated Cosmas Long’or Napeikar on his victory.
“Congratulations to Hon. Cosmas Long’or Napeikar on your well-earned election as MCA for Naanam Ward, your win is a true reflection of grounded leadership, and commitment to uplifting the residents of Turkana County at large. The UDA family proudly stands with you as you begin this important journey of service,” the party stated.
McOure’s critique highlighted two key concerns arising from Sifuna’s statement.
“Because if that is the case, then two things have become abundantly clear: The existence of Broad Based Candidates is no longer in dispute.

The Party Spokesperson has demonstrated a worrying lack of keenness and rigour when speaking on behalf of ODM, especially on matters as sensitive and consequential as election results,” he wrote.
The activist emphasized that Nanam Ward was not an ODM victory and redirected attention to Kariobangi North, where he suggested the party should have focused its energy.
“Nanam Ward is not an ODM victory. Kariobangi North should have been, and would have been, had you marshalled even a fraction of the energy you invest in sanitising party dissidents and those determined to sabotage the Broad-Based Arrangement,” McOure stated.
He accused Sifuna of prioritizing sideshows over defending the party’s genuine interests.
“You had one job: defend the party’s interests where it mattered. Instead, you chose sideshows, slogans, and theatrics,” the activist wrote.
McOure warned that ODM leadership would be held accountable for such lapses, stressing the sensitivity of the current political moment.
“We shall hold you accountable, fully and to the very end. ODM cannot afford spokespersons who speak carelessly, mislead the public, or undermine the strategic architecture of the Broad-Based effort. The stakes are too high,” he concluded.
