According to reports, a man identified as Benard Otieno Anah was killed on suspicion of taking 8kgs of maize and beans valued at KSh 2000 from Rabondo SDA during the 2023 West Kenya Union Conference Pathfinder Camporee.

The victim’s cousin, Davji Attelah revealed that the deceased was forcefully taken from his house at around 8pm.

Attelah said Otieno was picked under the supervision of a local assistant chief, a pastor of Rabondo SDA and members of the church.

“He was taken to the church building, which is 120 meters from his home and beaten mercilessly. He was grabbed out of the church when he was half dead and finally killed at a nearby marketplace by the same perpetrators,” said Attelah.

He added that Otieno was torched and under duress, forced to list the names of other alleged criminals in the village.

“This tragic event underscores the dangerous trend of individuals taking the law into their own hands, especially a church, in the name of mob injustice,” regretted Attelah.

Otieno left behind three children and a heavily pregnant wife.

While condemning the incident, Attelah said that there is no evidence to suggest that injustice perpetrated by the mob effectively minimises crimes in our villages.

On the contrary, he said it perpetuates a cycle of violence and destruction.

During Otieno’s burial on Thursday, January 18, Attelah said they would take legal action against those involved in the killing.

“We want to notify the authorities and those involved in the killing that we will pursue transformative justice, we will bring the accusers to the law and take the law to the community. Justice to Anah is justice to his wife, children, parents, and neighbours,” he said.
