Outrage after government sends warning letters to chiefs attending opposition meetings

Senior government officials issues warning letters to chiefs after attending opposition Governor Simba Arati meeting

Senior government officials issues warning letters to chiefs after attending opposition Governor Simba Arati meeting.

Following their attendance at a meeting held at the residence of Kisii Governor Simba Arati, local administration staff in Kisii have received warning letters from senior government officials.

While condemning the act on Monday, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Communications Director Philip Etale, spoke in defence of the Kisii Governor who is affiliated with the opposition party.

In a statement, he expressed his regret that the move is illegal and that it will cause a rift between the two levels of government.

“This is serious, I thought the Constitution says the National Govt and County Government are interdependent under Article 6 (2). Chiefs meeting Governor ⁦Simba Arati has become a crime”, Etale lamented.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a source confirmed the receipt of the letters by the chiefs.

The governor allegedly called a meeting to discuss county development issues, such as the widespread distribution of mosquito nets and the awarding of bursaries.

But following the meeting, the chiefs bemoaned receiving letters of warning from senior national government officials whom they could not identify.

The letters seemed to be a warning to the chiefs, alleging that they had disregarded official procedures and policies because the majority of them had not been able to report for duty as usual during the holiday season.

“This letter is to warn you of your actions and that severe consequences of not adhering to the directives will be imposed on you,” the letter allegedly read.

The governor emphasized the importance of cooperation between the federal government and county governments at a prior meeting conducted at the Kenya Institute of Highways and Building Technology (KHIBIT).

In his speech, he also alluded to the constitution to champion this collaboration stating that levels of governments are interrelated and need to work together in discharging their various functions for the benefit of the Kenyan people.
