Petrol Stations selling adulterated fuel and gas exposed
Petrol Stations selling adulterated fuel and gas, risking the lives of motorists and other Kenyans exposed in EPRA’s crackdown
Petrol stations selling contaminated fuel were exposed by the Energy Petroleum and Regulatory Authority (EPRA), endangering the lives of drivers and innocent Kenyans.
The regulatory body said that four stations dispersed across the nation were discovered to be selling tainted fuel in a notice dated Friday, September 30.
The mentioned stations were located in Kiambu, Machakos, Kajiado, and Bungoma, as they failed to fulfill the standards established by the Energy Regulations of 2013.
A filling station in Kiambu county was penalized Ksh500,000 and ordered to upgrade the product after the fine was imposed.
In Kajiado, the entire petrol station was shut down for an unspecified period. EPRA explained that the facility was offering for sale diesel and super petrol adulterated with domestic kerosene and containing high sulphur.
In Machakos and Bugoma, the energy regulator sealed all the super petrol dispensing pumps in the flagged filling stations.
“During the period July – September 2022, a total of 1,360 tests were conducted at 256 petroleum sites. From the tests, 98.44 percent of the sites were found to be compliant. However, tests from four sites turned out to be non-compliant,” EPRA’s notice read in part.
“The authority maintains a hotline number (0709336000), operational during normal working hours to enhance enforcement and compliance activities.”
“Members of the public are requested to be vigilant and are encouraged to report any suspected cases of illegal trade of LPG in cylinders through the hotline number,” EPRA stated.
The process of testing fuel sold at various petroleum stations is intended to assist the government in safeguarding customers from the risk of consuming tainted fuel in the country.
