Police officer attached to NEMA caught receiving a bribe

A police officer attached to the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) was arrested on Friday, April 11 after he was caught red-handed receiving a bribe of Ksh50,000.
According to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), the officer identified as Cleophas Kiptoo Koech was apprehended by officials from the agency during a sting operation following a tip-off from a member of the public.
EACC explained that Koech had allegedly demanded the bribe as an inducement not to charge a woman with the offense of discharging effluent from a building.
“Following reports from a complainant that a NEMA officer was demanding a bribe of Ksh50,000 as an inducement not to charge her with the offense of discharging effluent from a building, EACC launched an operation this morning and arrested one Cleophas Kiptoo Koech while receiving the bribe,” the EACC said.
Koech was processed at Kilimani Police Station as investigations continue.
This arrest came a day after EACC recovered Ksh6.5 million in cash stashed inside the vehicle of a top Turkana County Government official during a raid targeting individuals suspected of corruption.

In a statement on Thursday, April 10, the EACC said the operation targeted residences and offices belonging to high-ranking officials of the county.
According to the agency, among those under investigation is County Executive Committee Member for Finance Michael Eregae Ekidor alongside several chief officers, directors, and businessmen closely linked to the county government.
EACC noted that during a raid targeting Ekidor, investigators recovered Ksh6.5 million stashed inside his vehicle.
“Today’s operations have yielded valuable evidentiary material to support the ongoing investigations including Ksh6.5 million in cash, recovered inside Michael Eregae’s motor vehicle. The money is suspected to be proceeds of corruption,” the statement added.
