Police teargas Raila’s entourage in Nairobi during the nationwide mass demonstrations.

Chaos erupted on Monday afternoon after a contingent of anti-riot police officers staged a battle of might with protesters after confronting Azimio la Umoja – One Kenya coalition supremo Raila Odinga’s march to Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD).

Anti-riot police in Nairobi lobbed teargas canisters at Azimio La Umoja One Kenya leader Raila Odinga’s motorcade as it left Serena Hotel near the city centre.

Raila Odinga left the hotel flanked by his co-principal Martha Karua and a raft of opposition leaders such as Eugene Wamalwa, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Roots Party leader George Wajackoyah, among others.

Raila’s motorcade was forced to attempt an alternative route to access the Nairobi CBD after the officers blocked access via Kenyatta Avenue.

After dramatically leaving the Serena Hotel, the convoy went through Kamkunji, before arriving at Eastleigh.

The police again sprayed water on the protestors and Raila’s convoy.

Opposition protesters at the scene called out police for accepting to be ‘used’ by the state to frustrate them despite it being gazetted that it was legal to stage protests.

Supporters were singing and dancing to the tune of a song dedicated to Raila, as they maneuvered Nairobi.

“Ya Baba! Jeshi ya Baba!”

“Mambo bado, ndio tumeanza,” he said while supporters were chanting ‘Ndio Baba!’

They reiterated that they were only holding peaceful demonstrations in accordance with the constitution and therefore police should in no way frustrate their pursuit for justice.
