In a significant shift for Kenyan travelers bound for Europe, the Embassy of Portugal in Nairobi has officially launched its own dedicated visa section, streamlining the application process for those seeking entry into the Lusophone nation.

The announcement was formalised in a public notice issued by the Kenya High Commission in Maputo, Mozambique, dated March 27, 2026.

According to the statement (Ref. No: KHCM/CONS/2 VOL. 111 (38)), the new section has been operational and actively receiving visa applications since March 5, 2026.

“The Kenya High Commission in Maputo wishes to notify Kenyans applying / intending to apply for the Portuguese visa that the Embassy of Portugal in Nairobi has opened a Visa Section at its premises and has been receiving applications from March 5, 2026,” the statement reads.

For years, a “Representation Agreement” existed between the Embassy of Portugal and the Embassy of Greece (Hellenic Republic) in Nairobi.

Under this bilateral arrangement, the Greek Embassy handled the issuance of Schengen visas on behalf of Portugal. However, the Kenya High Commission confirmed that this agreement ceased on March 1, 2026.

This transition marks a new chapter in diplomatic logistics, moving all administrative responsibilities for Portuguese travel documents directly to Portuguese sovereign premises.

The notice serves as a critical directive for Kenyans currently applying or intending to apply for a Portuguese visa. The key takeaways from the diplomatic mission include:

Direct Processing: All Portuguese visa applications are now processed exclusively at the Embassy of Portugal in Nairobi.

Centralized Logistics: Travelers no longer need to visit the Greek Embassy for Portuguese-specific travel permits. Operational

Status: The section is fully functional, having integrated into the local diplomatic landscape over the past three weeks.

The Kenya High Commission in Maputo, which oversees various regional diplomatic interests, emphasized that this move is intended to clarify the new procedures and ensure that applicants direct their inquiries to the correct office.
