Public Participation on Gachagua impeachment kicks off across the Country

The public participation exercise on the impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has kicked off across various centres in the country

The public participation exercise on the impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has kicked off across various centres in the country.

Members of the public will have the opportunity on Friday to express their views regarding the special motion to remove Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua from office.

In photos and videos shared on Friday morning, October 4, several members of the public already began filling out the provided questionnaires as others made their way to the venues.

The members of the public lined up in huge numbers to access the premises of the public participation hearing.

This public participation exercise is set to take place in all 47 counties across the country.

In Nairobi, the collection center for public opinions from all constituencies in the city will be located at the Bomas of Kenya.

Similarly, the views can be forwarded to the Clerk of the National Assembly via P.O. Box 41842-00100 Nairobi or hand delivered to his office at Main Parliament buildings in Nairobi.

Parliament disclosed that during the public hearings on the motion across all the counties in the country, the views will be collated.

On Thursday, Gachagua lost his bid to halt the public participation forums. He argued that these forums should be conducted in all 290 constituencies, as well as in the diaspora and the 1,450 electoral wards where presidential elections occur. In his petition, Gachagua contended that holding the public participation exercise for just one day is “grossly insufficient to facilitate any meaningful public participation.”

The High Court declined to issue interim orders to stop the exercise and has scheduled a hearing for October 9, 2024.

In the impeachment motion, Gachagua faces accusations of dividing Kenyans along ethnic lines, undermining the presidency, violating his oath of office, and contradicting the National Cohesion and Integration Act.

Additional grounds for impeachment include allegedly amassing Ksh. 5.2 billion in property through corrupt means, inciting the public against directives from the Nairobi County government, gross misconduct, and bullying.

The National Assembly has a seven-day timeline, which expires on Tuesday, to decide on the special motion to impeach Gachagua before the Senate takes up the matter.
