Radio Maisha presenter quits after 9 years to join politics
Popular Radio Maisha morning show host Shugaboy, whose real name is Ally Mwayongwa, has officially left the station after nine years, setting his sights on agriculture and politics
Popular Radio Maisha morning show host Shugaboy, whose real name is Ally Mwayongwa, has officially left the station after nine years, setting his sights on agriculture and politics.
He hosted his final edition of the flagship morning show, Maisha Asubuhi, on February 27, 2026, alongside longtime co-host Main Man Rio before signing off for good.
In a candid farewell statement on Facebook, Shugaboy reflected on his journey, writing how he came in with little or no skills, but is leaving fully equipped and ready to face the next step of his life’s journey.
He openly detailed the wealth he accumulated over his nine years at the station, citing assets such as vehicles, parcels of land and rental properties as evidence of his financial gains.
”Apart from the sweet and sour memories, this station has really built me. I am not a show-off person but today allows me to list all the things that this station has enabled me to acquire,” he stated, going ahead to list all the things he has acquired while at the station.
The list included three personal cars, two 14-seater matatus, a tuk-tuk, five bodabodas, a pub, two Swahili rental houses, four pieces of land, and a five-bedroom house currently under construction.

Shugaboy made clear he would not be rushing back to a microphone anytime soon, stating he would only return to media for a pay above 700k, non-negotiable.
”Not joining any other Media house Again Unless for a Pay Above 700k non-negotiable”, stated Shugaboy.
His departure comes as Radio Maisha undergoes a significant transition, with the station set to rebrand under the hashtag MwamkoMpya starting March 2, 2026.
Shugaboy is not the only familiar voice walking out the door. He follows high-profile exits by Mike Nyagwoka and Shaffie Zele in a broader shake-up at the Standard Group Media-owned station.
During his tenure, Shugaboy grew from hosting the evening show Maisha Jioni to anchoring the coveted morning slot, becoming a household name largely through his popular segment, Wrong Number.
His humour and relatable style built him a loyal following over the years, making his exit one that many listeners across the country will feel in their morning routines.
Wrapping up his statement with characteristic warmth, Shugaboy wrote, “Bye my love Radio Maisha. Tuko mbele pamoja,” a bittersweet send-off to his fans across the country.
