Raila gives Ruto conditions to meet before an audit of last year’s General Election is conducted.

Before conducting an audit of the 2022 General Election, the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition wants President William Ruto to meet a number of conditions.

The coalition claims to favor the audit, but they would only back a plan that established an inclusive panel of inquiry.

Azimio maintains that a foreign judge or lawyer should be in charge of the commission of investigation.

Parliament should review the candidates chosen to lead it and discuss the final report.

The Azimio coalition said President Ruto should not appoint members of the commission.

Azimio coalition leaders say if the intention of the audit is to fix the problem at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), President Ruto should not single-handedly appoint the commissioners.

The chairman of the panel, according to the opposition coalition, should be a foreigner who enjoys respect on a global scale and who is supported by both sides of the political spectrum.

Azimio argues that the person should be conscious that his reputation is on the line if he botches the process and Kenyans are still debating the same electoral concerns in 2027.

Azimio desires an equal distribution of representatives from its coalition and Kenya Kwanza among the commission’s members.

Enoch Wambua, a senator for Kitui, stated to the Sunday Nation that it would be a farce to exclude one political party from the commission.

“The best way to do it is to have a commission of inquiry made up of eminent persons with political parties appointing an equal number of representatives to it. This commission should be chaired by a respected international figure,” Mr. Wambua said.

Apart from members appointed by the opposition and Kenya Kwanza into the commission, Azimio wants other stakeholders like journalists, teachers, lawyers, and religious leaders included.
