ODM Party Leader Raila Odinga on Monday, June 2, hosted Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi at his Karen residence.
In a statement following the meeting, Hussein Aden Igeh, the Spokesman for the President of Somaliland, said the discussion between President Abdillahi and Odinga was a strong reaffirmation of the enduring friendship between Somaliland and Kenya.
“This encounter was a profound reaffirmation of the enduring friendship, mutual respect, and shared democratic values that have long bound Somaliland and Kenya.
“It also underscored the deep personal rapport between President Abdirahman Irro and Hon. Odinga, a resolute champion of Somaliland’s sovereignty and democratic aspirations for decades,” read part of the statement.
During the meeting, the two leaders engaged in a candid dialogue aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation across strategic sectors, including peace and security, economic integration, education, cultural exchange, and diplomatic partnership.

“His Excellency extended his heartfelt gratitude for Hon. Odinga’s unwavering moral leadership and steadfast solidarity with the people of Somaliland. He lauded Odinga’s enduring commitment to justice, dignity, and the pursuit of self-determination, which has elevated the voice of Somaliland on the continental and global stages,” Igeh stated.
The meeting comes days after Somaliland opened up a diplomatic mission in Nairobi, despite an earlier cancellation notice from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the Kenyan government maintains and respectfully reaffirms its unwavering recognition of the Federal Republic of Somalia as a sovereign State.
“The Ministry further notes with concern that to the extent the event of the 27th May 2025 has not been granted approval from this Ministry, its investiture of the status of a Diplomatic Office does not enjoy the imprimatur of the Republic of Kenya and cannot be allowed to proceed,” the Ministry stated.
