Raila questions IEBC commissioners’ honesty as he responds to Chebukati’s claims of interference
Raila questions IEBC commissioners’ honesty as he responds to Chebukati’s claims of interference in his response affidavit to the Supreme Court case.
Azimio presidential candidate Raila Odinga has hit out at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman Wafula Chebukati over his claims of interference.
This came hours after each of the IEBC commissioners swore an affidavit in response to the presidential petition with counter-accusations.
The poll agency is split into two camps with Guliye and Boya Molu on Chebukati’s side while Vice chair Juliana Cherera leading the other group (Justus Nyangaya, Masit, and Francis Wanderi)
While attending a church service at Kibra, Nairobi, Raila questioned IEBC commissioners’ honesty over the conduct of the August general elections.
“The question we should ask ourselves is who between the two groups is telling the truth. Is it the three or four? I just want to be told the truth. It is not just because of the 2022 elections; it is for posterity. We don’t want to see a charade in our elections again. The split in IEBC is a shame,”
“They are trying to subvert the will of the people. Let the court give us justice. I fear no one. If I won, I won. If I lost I will go home but I know I won. I will stand firm and ensure that the voice of Kenyans on August 9 is respected,” the former Prime minister said.
In addition, Raila also hit out at Chebukati over his bribery and intimidation allegations.
“We said Kenya’s problem is corruption. If Chebukati, says he wanted to be bribed he should tell us by who and how much. You have failed on your work,”
Raila however, expressed his confidence in the Supreme court and vowed to respect its decision.
Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) vice chairperson, Juliana Cherera, has been accused of endorsing attempts to subvert the will of the voters in the just concluded August 9 polls where Deputy President William Ruto was declared president-elect.
In separate affidavits submitted before the Supreme Court on Saturday, August 27, IEBC chairperson Wafula Chebukati and commissioner Abdi Guliye noted that Cherera asked the electoral body boss to moderate the results in favour of a run-off.
