Raila responds after Ruto extended an olive branch for talks

Raila says the Azimio coalition is yet to get a formal invitation to talks with President William Ruto

Raila says the Azimio coalition is yet to get a formal invitation to talks with President William Ruto.

A formal invitation to meet with President William Ruto has not yet been extended to Azimio leader Raila Odinga, Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Director of Communication Philip Etale revealed on Wednesday, July 26.

According to Etale, the opposition is open to dialogue, but the coalition wants to hold the government accountable for policies that directly impact Kenyans.

The opposition prioritizes cutting living expenses, reestablishing the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) through a comprehensive process, inspecting the IEBC servers, and respecting political parties.

“He (Raila) just saw it on Twitter just like everyone else. In any case, Raila has maintained that Azimio is ready to hold talks in a structured way, meaningful talks that will address the issues Kenyans and Azimio are raising,” Etale stated.

In addition, Minority leader Opiyo Wandayi has expressed his disappointment with President William Ruto’s invitation to opposition leader Raila Odinga through a tweet.

Wandayi said it was impolite for the president to invite the opposition leader through a social media statement.

“Ruto must respect Baba, inviting him via a tweet is disrespectful,” said Wandayi speaking on Ramogi radio Wednesday morning.

The Ugunja MP also stated that the Azimio la Umoja coalition is prepared to hold talks with the government.

Ruto on Tuesday sent a cryptic message that he is open to talks with the opposition leader, just hours after Raila revealed that Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu came to mediate but was kept waiting for two days before leaving frustrated.

“My friend Raila Odinga, I am off to Tanzania for a human capital meeting to harmonize the expansion of employment opportunities in our continent,” Ruto tweeted.
