Raila sets condition for him to hold talks with Ruto

Raila says there must be a mediator for him to hold talks with William Ruto owing to president's 'untrustworthy'

Raila says there must be a mediator for him to hold talks with William Ruto owing to president’s ‘untrustworthy’.

Azimio leader Raila Odinga has said he will not hold a dialogue with President William Ruto unless there is a third party to mediate between them.

Speaking to AFP on Wednesday, July 26, 2023, Raila stressed that Ruto was ‘untrustworthy’ and claimed that he (Ruto) was not a man of his word.

While stressing the need for a mediator, Raila affirmed that he was prepared to hold talks if his conditions are met.

“He is not somebody you can trust, he keeps changing words that is why I insist they must be a mediator between us. I am ready to talk if there is a mediator between us,” he said.

Raila was speaking to AFP after meeting injured protesters at two different hospitals.

He stated that he is not after a handshake, a euphemism for power sharing, with President Ruto whom he has claimed he defeated in the 2022 polls.

In addition, Raila Odinga claimed that President William Ruto had rejected Cyril Ramaphosa’s offer to mediate peace talks after snubbing Tanzania President Samia Suluhu.

In an interview with AFP, Raila claimed that the South African president had offered to break the nation’s political deadlock, but Ruto had rejected the proposal.

“I insist there must be somebody between us. President Ramaphosa wants to come but he has refused. President Suluhu is there. There must be an intermediary between us. Even if it is a former president,” Raila told AFP.

Raila’s call for a mediator comes after President Ruto on Tuesday evening told Raila that he was ready to meet him for one on one talks at the opposition leader’s convenience.

“My friend @RailaOdinga, am off to Tanzania for a human capital meeting to harmonise the expansion of employment opportunities in our continent. Am back tomorrow evening, and as you have always known, am available to meet one on one with you anytime at your convenience,” the president said on Tuesday.
