Azimio leader Raila Odinga to issue major statement on Thursday over the proposed controversial Finance Bill, 2023.

Azimio leader Raila Odinga now says the party will make a major statement on the controversial Finance Bill 2023-24 on Thursday.

Mr. Odinga, who has previously voiced opposition to the bill, told a press conference in Nairobi on Monday that the coalition will highlight their contentions and advise on the way forward as it awaits deliberation by Parliament.

Raila threatened the return of anti-government protests if the Opposition demands are not met.

“On the Finance Bill issue, we as Azimio will give a detailed statement on Thursday to tell Kenyans why we oppose it and what they should do if it is brought to parliament,” Odinga said.

“We are putting the government on notice that we shall resume mass protests if our demands are not met,” he said.

Raila urged Azimio MPs to reject the Bill as he called on supporters to “deal” with MPs who will vote for its implementation.

The Finance Bill, 2023 proposes a 16 per cent Value Added Tax on fuel and a housing fund, among other levies, as the Kenya Kwanza government seeks to raise more money from Kenyans.

But while the Azimio coalition has signalled to resume anti-government protests if the controversial bill 2023 is not reviewed, the government remains bullish, with Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua asserting that the bill will pass in parliament as it is.

However, Raila termed politicians supporting the bill as enemies of the country, telling Kenyans to take note of whoever does not reject it.

“There have been all these threats but our MPs have been told to oppose it fiercely. We want Kenyans to watch out keenly for whoever will support that bill because that is betraying Kenyans,” said the Azimio leader.

The 2023/2024 budget is set to be tabled before Parliament on June 15.
