Raila to consider vying for president in 2027 elections

Azimio leader Raila Odinga now says he may consider vying for president in the 2027 general elections subject to the ODM mass recruitment process

Azimio leader Raila Odinga now says he may consider vying for president in the 2027 general elections subject to the ODM mass recruitment process.

Speaking in Shinyalu constituency, Kakamega County during the ongoing ODM mass recruitment countrywide, Raila rallied the youth across the country especially the ODM stronghold to turn for the exercise insisting that the youth are the vanguard of the party.

The Raila Odinga-led party commenced the recruitment drive ahead of the grassroots election set for March 2024 as well as to enhance the party’s image ahead of the 2024 polls.

“When you register as party members, I will consider. Just make sure you register as ODM party members then I can consider whether to continue with the political race,” he told the crowd.

Raila expressed that the opposition party will miss out in the upcoming polls if the youth don’t join the association and scale it forward.

“We want the youth to join the ODM party and give it power because they are the vanguard of the party. Those who are not young let them scale up instead of lulling the party,” Odinga noted.

Butere MP Tindi Mwale urged Odinga to vie in the 2027 general election which four months is away advising him to choose Former Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya as his deputy.

“Baba we want to tell you that it’s not too late for you to vie. We urge you to run the race in 2027 and choose Oparanya as your Deputy President,” Mwale said.

Key leaders within the opposition coalition have been pushing for a succession plan in which Odinga will be a kingmaker by backing another candidate to face President William Ruto in the 2027 polls.

Former Vice President and Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka has declared he will be in the presidential race and is regarded by his supporters as first among equals in the crop of leaders hoping to succeed Odinga.

Musyoka has emerged as the face and voice of the opposition in Kenya’s politics after the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition team failed to clinch the Presidency on August 9.

Raila had earlier hinted at backing Kalonzo to face President William Ruto in 2027 intimating he could be retiring from politics.

Hours later he came out to clarify media reports that he endorsed Musyoka for the presidency in the 2027 general elections.

Odinga said that he only praised Kalonzo for his strong decision to support him in successive elections saying he hadn’t retired from active politics.
