Raila turns heat on ODM rebels as Ruto raids troops

Raila to convene a parliamentary group meeting for stock-taking in wake of ODM MPs ditching Azimio to join Ruto

Raila to convene a parliamentary group meeting for stock-taking in wake of ODM MPs ditching Azimio to join Ruto.

ODM rebels who paid a visit to Ruto may find themselves in trouble after it emerged Azimio leader Raila Odinga plans to crack the whip.

Some leaders in the party demanded disciplinary action.

However, the leader of the Minority in the National Assembly Opiyo Wandayi asked the members not to demonize their colleagues.

Wandayi confirmed that the party would convene a parliamentary group meeting for stock-taking after which appropriate decisions would be made.

Leaders are expected to check in tomorrow at Stoni Athi Resort and meet on Friday morning before attending a rally at Mavoko, Machakos county, in the afternoon.

Their retreat comes in the wake of a visit to President William Ruto at State House yesterday morning by a section of Nyanza leaders elected on Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) tickets.

The visit is seen as part of Ruto’s political strategy to slow down opposition leader Raila Odinga’s rallies.

ODM’s Director of Political Affairs and National Assembly Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi (Ugunja) said that as a coalition there was a need to take stock of how the political divide has performed its functions, both in and out of parliament.

“We are gearing up for the commencement of the second session of the 13th National Assembly and it is important that we take stock,” he said.

The retreat also comes at a time when some of Raila’s key allies have been skipping his weekly rallies.

But Wandayi a close ally of Raila, further disclosed that the retreat is mainly for housekeeping purposes.

“Dewhipping any leader is not our agenda. We are not in the mood of punishing anyone. It is in order to take stock of the gains we have made and the possible losses we might have incurred since we went for the long recess,” he noted.

The Ugunja lawmaker also responded to calls by Azimio leaders to punish those who failed to attend the rallies and engagement forums.

“We have made it very clear that we want every Azimio MP to attend, of course, there might be cases that are beyond our control. . We can’t assume that all those not attending are rebelling,” Wandayi declared.
