Raila wants Interpol to investigate the death of high-profile ICC witness Paul Gicheru to avoid a cover-up in Kenya.

In his statement by Prof Makau Mutua on Wednesday, September 28, Raila Odinga termed the death of Paul Gicheru as mysterious and unexplained.

He called on the International Police (Interpol) to take over the investigations, expressing a lack of confidence in the local investigative agencies.

The Azimio leader explained that Gicheru’s death had international implications since the ICC had placed him in custody at the time of his death.

He stated that by virtue of being party to The Hague-based Court, Kenya had no option but to comply with investigations.

“The pattern of mysterious and unexplained deaths, some of them gruesome and macabre, is extremely disturbing.

“To avoid cover-up in Kenya, we call upon the international investigative agencies including Interpol to lead the investigation,” read the statement in part.

In addition, Raila condoled with Paul Gicheru’s family further demanding a probe into his son’s illness.

“His son was reportedly rushed to hospital in unclear circumstances at the time of his father’s death. Raila Odinga calls for a thorough and credible investigation to uncover Gicheru’s death and his son’s illness,” Makau Mutua noted.

Notably, the spokesperson for the Campaign Secretariat connected Gicheru’s untimely death to the trail of prominent ICC witnesses who also perished under mysterious circumstances.

Family lawyer John Khaminwa denied rumors that his client had food poisoning on September 29.

However, he saw that in his final days, the ICC suspect appeared nervous, anxious, and depressed.

The mother of the deceased, Josephine Wambui, denied any underlying medical issues, claiming he was in excellent health and frequently visited the family.

Gicheru had entered a not guilty plea to a charge of tampering with witnesses at the International Criminal Court in connection with the 2007–2008 post-election violence case.
