Renowned journalist and news anchor Zubeidah Koome has announced her exit from KTN after 18 years.

In a statement on Thursday, September 25, Koome reflected on her journey at the media house, and expressed gratitude to her colleagues and mentors.

“After 18 incredible years at Standard Group PLC, a chapter that has shaped my journey as a journalist, news anchor, and editor, I am stepping into a new season.

“These years have been filled with lessons, growth, challenges, and friendships I will forever treasure. I am deeply grateful to colleagues, mentors, and friends who have walked this path with me,” she said.

Koome, who also serves in the Kenya Editors Guild, noted that while she was leaving KTN, her dedication to journalism remains unwavering.

“While I close this chapter, my commitment to journalism and to serving our fraternity through the Kenya Editors Guild remains stronger than ever. The story continues, and together, we will keep shaping the future of media. Here’s to new beginnings, to resilience, and to purpose,” she added.

Koome’s journalism career began in 2007 when she joined KTN as an intern for three months.

After completing her internship, she was offered a one-year contract, and in 2009, she was confirmed as a permanent employee.

Koome rose steadily through the ranks, first as a reporter, then as a senior reporter, and eventually as a political editor and news anchor.

In 2012, she was promoted to Political Editor and also became one of the main Swahili anchors for KTN Leo.

Over the years, she has produced and hosted several popular current affairs programs, including Jukwaa la KTN, Dira ya Wiki, and Kioo cha Hoja.

Beyond her role as a journalist, Zubeidah has taken up leadership positions within the media industry.

In 2023, she made history by becoming the first female journalist to be elected President of the Kenya Editors Guild.

This comes months after Ken Mijungu announced his departure from the Standard Media Group-owned TV station after four years.

Mijungu made the announcement in an update on social media on Wednesday, February 5, expressing gratitude for his time at the station.

“A good dancer knows when to exit the stage! Four years of absolute adrenaline and nothing but the best—as unpredictable as it was. It’s time to find something else to do while I still can. Forever grateful to God, my colleagues Standard Group, and KTN News. Adios,” he wrote.

Mijungu, who had been a familiar face on KTN, has built a reputation for his sharp reporting and engaging news presentation.

He attended Maseno School for his secondary education from 1998 to 2001 and joined Moi University where he earned a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree.

After completing his law degree in 2007, Mijungu initially worked as a cab driver before making his entry into journalism during the 2007/2008 post-election violence.

He borrowed a camera from his brother to capture the events in Kibera, catching the attention of K24 TV where he was recruited as a reporter.

Mijungu’s media career includes roles at several prominent organizations including K24 TV where he worked for nearly four years, CCTV Africa (now CGTN) where he joined in 2012 as a reporter.

He later served as a senior reporter and anchor at NTV Kenya for seven years, notably hosting the Sidebar show, where he conducted in-depth interviews with prominent figures.
