Ruto ally fires warning at IG Koome ‘Do your work or resign’

The Inspector General of Police (IG) Japhet Koome put on the spot over persistent insecurity in the North Rift region

The Inspector General of Police (IG) Japhet Koome put on the spot over persistent insecurity in the North Rift region.

Senate Majority leader Aaron Cheruiyot has faulted the Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome for his silence on the banditry in the North Rift Region.

Speaking on Sunday, March 31 in Bomet County, wondered why the Police IG is quiet when Kenyans are being attacked by bandits.

The Kericho Senator noted that Interior CS Kithure Kindiki should not be entirely blamed for the insecurity in the North Rift region.

“I want to ask, where did the person we gave the Inspector General of Police job, named Koome, go? Why don’t I hear his voice? How can you be the Inspector General of Police and Kenyans are being killed and maimed every day yet you are silent?” Cheruiyot posed.

The UDA Senator told IG Koome to move from his office and visit the North Rift regions that are targeted by bandits.

Senator Cheruiyot challenged IG Koome to resign if he is unable to deal with banditry and insecurity in parts of the country that have caused massive loss of lives and property.

“If the IG (Koome) can not guarantee peace for Kenyans, he can step aside and pave the way for those with the ability to do so to take charge (of the docket)” Mr Cheruiyot said.

It comes a day after President William Ruto held a meeting with Cabinet Secretary for Interior Kithure Kindiki, Principal Secretary Dr Raymond Omollo, Mr Koome, and his two deputies – Douglas Kanja and Noor Gabow.

The North Rift region has been experiencing renewed banditry attacks with dozens shot dead in the last few weeks.

On Saturday police officers gunned down three bandits in a fierce shootout in Lorugum, Turkana County.

One of the suspects identified as Simon Lopongorei is a notorious gang leader with three pending court cases of robbery with violence, gang-rape and threatening to kill.

The second suspect was identified as Lokucha Ngeruk alias sharpshooter, a close associate and aide to Lopongorei while the third suspect was identified as 21-year-old Tiya Logumo.
