President Ruto appoints team that will choose members to advise him on exercising the power of mercy.
President Ruto has appointed Aggrey Mudembei to chair the team tasked with selecting members of the Power of Mercy Advisory Committee.
Other members appointed include Lynette Mwangi, Jonam Kenama, Dixon M Mwakazi, Jasper M Mbiuki, Dan Kenneth Ameyo, Reverend Martha Wairimu Kihika, Sara Bonaya, and Thomas Okoth Koyier appointed as part of the selection panel.
Thomas J Nyamorata and Caroline Jerono Kibiwott were on the other hand appointed as joint secretaries of the panel.
With the team in place, the panel is expected to invite applications from persons who qualify for appointment as members of the Committee under Section 5(1)(b).
The selection panel is expected to issue a list of qualified applicants whose names will be published in at least two daily newspapers of national circulation.
The Panel will then conduct interviews of the shortlisted persons in public and later on recommend to the President the qualified persons appointed as members.

Members of the Committee, apart from the Attorney-General and Cabinet Secretary, will however hold office for a single term of five years, and will not be eligible for re-appointment.
The Power of Mercy Advisory Committee is a constitutional body whose core mandate is to advise the President on the exercise of granting prisoners mercy.
With this, the president then has the power to grant release and pardon rehabilitated convicts who show improvement after years of serving long sentences, hence allowing them back to the public for good behaviour.
The president can also exercise the power of mercy by reducing the number of years a convict is to serve, as well as reducing the punishment.
