Ruto asked to rethink his foreign policy after cutting Mutua's powers

Ruto warned over his decision to put some of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs functions under the office of the Deputy President

Ruto warned over his decision to put some of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs functions under the office of the Deputy President.

Senior Counsel Ahmednassir Abdullahi has warned President Ruto against making changes in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In an update via Twitter on Saturday, March 4, the city lawyer stated that it was wrong for President Ruto to transfer some Foreign Affairs powers to Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s office.

“We all know running the Foreign Ministry isn’t a child’s play like shooting “Cobra Squad” videos or promising gullible rural folk that Machakos will be a formula 1 circuit, but I think H.E William Ruto must rethink his decision to make the Ministry a dept in DP Rigathi Gachagua’s office,” He tweeted.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday announced that it will henceforth allow Foreign missions to directly engage different ministries.

In a statement, the missions will also engage state departments and agencies directly and not through the ministry headed by Alfred Mutua.

It was also announced that Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua will approve any engagements by foreign missions that will require two or more ministries to engage.

The new announcement by CS Mutua is largely seen as a move by President William Ruto to strip him of his powers.

This comes even as questions have been raised about his working relationship with Ruto.

Some quotas argue that Trade CS Moses Kuria has been performing duties that ideally be performed by Mutua due to his frequent travels to meet leaders in other countries.

However, Dr. Mutua said the changes were because of pending MoUs and lost opportunities which were a result of the procedures involved.

He added that the decision was arrived at after consultations with the diplomatic community.

“As CS for Foreign and Diaspora affairs, I have been bothered by many pending MOUs and lost opportunities due to traditional and mostly elitist-based bureaucracy. After talks with the diplomatic community, I have issued the following notice for Chap Chap interactions,” he said.
