Ruto changes tune over the construction of a World-Class Stadium in five months for the celebration of the Madaraka Day fete

Ruto changes tune over the construction of a World-Class Stadium in five months for the celebration of the Madaraka Day fete.

The government acknowledged that it would be difficult to build the Embu International Stadium in time for the Madaraka Day celebrations in 2023.

Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire revealed in a statement on Tuesday, February 7, that the organizing committee determined that building a FIFA-standard stadium would require more time than the allotted time.

Mbarire revealed that although the location for the Madaraka Day celebration had been changed to the Embu Moi Stadium, work on the 20,000-capacity sports facility would continue as scheduled.

“The celebrations will be held at the Moi stadium. A team from the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) is on-site to conduct renovations ahead of the event,” she stated.

The county boss made the announcement following a debrief by a multi-agency team including the National Celebrations Technical Committee, Sports Kenya, and a team from the KDF.

Mbarire met with traders and businessmen in the market adjacent to the stadium pending their relocation to allow construction works to take place.

Meanwhile, she disclosed that the Permanent Presidential Music Commission had opened auditions for those interested in performing during the celebrations.

The audition would be held between February 14 to 19 within all five sub-counties of the devolved unit.

In keeping with the state’s initiative to decentralize national celebrations, President William Ruto, who is anticipated to preside over the festivities, announced Embu as its host.

On January 18, Interior Principal Secretary (PS) Raymond Omollo announced plans to construct the stadium at the Njukiri grounds.

The county and national governments would split the expense of converting the grounds that had previously served as the site of the annual Agriculture Society of Kenya (ASK) exhibition into a sports arena.
