Ruto eyes the 2027 re-election bid as he announces plans for nationwide elections for the UDA party (United Democratic Alliance).

President William Ruto has declared that the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) will hold party elections in December 2023.

The party will soon issue the election schedule so that members can choose new leaders, the party’s president said on Saturday, September 9, when he opened the UDA offices in Nyeri County.

“We are going to have UDA party elections countrywide in December 2023, We are going to release the timetable to ensure the leadership of the party is determined by members,” said Ruto.

President Ruto pointed out that no leader will be given the UDA party leadership role through roundtable discussions, adding that members are the ones to vote for the leaders.

“Members will be given a chance to vote for the right leaders to manage affairs of the party in order for us to build a national party that is going to unite the country,” Ruto narrated.

He further called on Kenyans to support the ruling party saying it is people-centered and accommodates all ethnicities.

“We want to strengthen UDA and make it a stronger national party that is people-centered, issue-based, and more organized in driving the country towards a prosperous future,” he added.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, on his part, informed the president that he would mobilize people in the Mount Kenya region and throughout the country to register as party members.

UDA secretary general Cleophas Malala said their aim was to consolidate the party’s popularity nationwide ahead of 2027 and guarantee the president’s re-election.

“We want to build this party to be the greatest party in the country so that by 2027, we will just place the portrait of the President on the ballot and have him re-elected. I am appealing to you to register as a member of UDA so that you can participate in this democratic process,” said Mr Malala.

The announcement by Ruto amid calls to the Kenya Kwanza affiliate parties to fold and join the UDA party.

The move is seen as an effort by President Ruto to consolidate support ahead of the 2027 general elections.
