Ruto announces plan to seize all idle land(absentee landlords) across the country for resettlement of squatters.

President William Ruto has said that soon absentee Mombasa landlords will be bought off and their parcels of land subdivided and given to landless residents in the area.

Speaking in Mombasa on Wednesday Ruto threatened to force the State to buy absentee landlords out if they did not sell their underutilized land to the government at the going rate .

Ruto was in the region to officially open the Bamburi-Mwakirunge – Kaloleni Road upgrade.

He clarified that the government was searching for strategies to guarantee that every squatter was settled across the country.

“We will deal with absentee landlords, in the budget I approved two months ago there is about Ksh1 billion to pay off these landlords and settle some squatters,” Ruto stated.

President Ruto said the project will be ongoing for the next five years to ensure unutilised land is issued to the squatters and the owners are paid by the government.

In addition, Ruto said at least 11 landing sites will be established in the coastal region to boost the country’s economy.

“This ocean can generate an annual revenue of approximately Ksh100 billion and we want these young men to get the necessary skills and create employment for themselves,” Ruto stated.

Ruto had earlier suggested that it was unnecessary to demolish the homes of Kenyans living on government land.

The President while addressing the increased land wrangles in the country, vowed to deal with fraudsters faking land titles to con Kenyans.

The President spoke ahead of Britain’s King Charles tour of Mombasa, that will coincide with his stay at the Coast, as he added that Kenya’s global efforts are bearing fruit for the local economy.
