Brokers and middlemen would be removed from the food production and supply chain, according to recent changes outlined by President William Ruto.

Ruto made the statement on December 22 when he met with regional and county commissioners at the State House.

He added that the goal of the order was to reduce the cost of production, which would then reduce the price of food; in the maize sector.

“The move is aimed at reducing the cost of food production in the country,” he announced. This intervention at the production level is right and targeted, and will make farmers produce more,” he added.

Additionally, Ruto gave the National Government Administration the responsibility of gathering information about farmers in order to regularly inform policy decisions.

In order to know their acreage, the crops they grow, and the inputs they need, we “must register our farmers,” he said.

Additionally, Ruto made it clear to the administrators that corruption would not be tolerated under his rule.

In order for Kenyans to receive government services as intended, he insisted, “We must be transparent.”

Additionally, he stated that moving forward, the state would employ stockists to distribute fertilizers in an effort to develop a long-term strategy for stabilizing the nation’s food supply.

“We will also use E-vouchers as a tool to deliver affordable fertilizers to farmers,” Ruto noted.

The directive followed Ruto’s effort to lower the cost of production that saw the National Treasury release Ksh3.6 billion for subsidized fertilizer in September

Agriculture Ministry Acting Principal Dr. Francis Owino later announced that the fertilizer would be distributed through the National Cereals Board depots and sub-depots countrywide.
