Ruto makes new appointments to UDA leadership; announces dates for party elections

President William Ruto made new appointments to the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party leadership ahead of the party's grassroots elections

President William Ruto made new appointments to the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party leadership ahead of the party’s grassroots elections.

In a statement on Tuesday, April 2, signed by the party Secretary General Cleophas Malala, UDA appointed Kenya Revenue Authority Chairman Anthony Mwaura as the Chairperson of the National Elections Board.

He will be deputised by Veronica Kiberenge and the board will consist of five members including Lydia, Munika, Jimmy Kaingi, Mary Mutinga, Halake Dida and Linda Kiome.

Kenya Power Board Chair, Joy Mdivo, was appointed to head the Electoral Dispute Resolution Committee. She will be deputised by Dr. Adrian Kamotho as the Committee will consist of seven members including Hellen Makone, Yvonne Cherop Kae, Dr. Duncan Ojwang, Dr. Kaberia Isaac.

The final members include Barbra Japan, Anjichi Joseph and Ziporah Karimi Muiruri.

The Internal Dispute Resolution Committee (IDRC) will be chaired by Rebecca Tonkel and will involve six members including Hassan Omar, Joshua Ong’era, Leah Manyarkly, Samuel Kariuki, Bishop Robert Theuri and Ronald Shako. 

At the same time, the UDA’s National Steering Committee has announced that its grassroots elections will be conducted in four phases.

UDA Chairperson Cecily Mbarire said the first phase of the grassroots elections will be conducted on April 26, 2024, in Nairobi, Narok, West Pokot, Busia, Homa Bay, and Garissa Counties. 

Phase two of the elections will take place on June 22, 2024, in Mombasa, Uasin Gishu, Nyandarua, Tharaka Nithi, Machakos, Kisii, Bungoma, Siaya, Taita Taveta, Wajir, Tana River, Kwale and Marsabit Counties.

The third phase will be conducted on August 10, 2024, in Kiambu, Embu, Kericho, Meru, Migori, Kakamega, Nyamira, Kitui, Elgeyo Marakwet, Samburu, Kajiado, Mndera, Kilifi, Muranga and Lamu Counties.

“Phase four will be conducted on August 24, 2024, in the following counties; Nakuru, Bomet, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Nandi, Baringo, Turkana, Laikipia, Trans Nzoia Kisumu, Vihiga, and Makueni,” Mbarire stated.

The Embu Governor noted that the elections would be conducted electronically to ensure it is free and fair.

Upon completion of the grassroots elections, the Party will conduct county and national elections by December 2024.
