Ruto now ready to import GMO maize despite opposition

Ruto now ready to import GMO maize according to Trade Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria following the cabinet decision.

Following a statement made by Moses Kuria, the Trade Cabinet Secretary, the government is prepared to permit the importation of maize that has undergone genetic modification (GMO).

The CS stated in a statement dated November 17 that he will sign several approving paperwork to permit the entry of the GMO maize.

Upon authorization, various importers will have the opportunity to import the GMO maize for a period of six months.

Additionally, the maize will be imported duty-free.

Kuria added that the action was intended to solve the continuing drought, with millions of Kenyans experiencing extreme malnutrition as a result of food insecurity.

The directive will also apply to imported non-GMO maize.

“In view of the food situation in the country, I shall be signing instruments to allow duty-free imports of GMO for the next six months,” he announced.

The announcement comes weeks after Cabinet ratified the ban on GMO foods that had been imposed during President Mwai Kibaki’s regime.

“Cabinet vacated its decision of November 8, 2012, prohibiting the open cultivation of genetically modified crops and the importation of food crops and animal feeds produced through biotechnology innovations.

“By dint of the executive action open cultivation and importation of white (GMO) maize is now authorized.” read a statement by Cabinet.

Raila Odinga, the leader of the Azimio, has voiced health concerns regarding the reintroduction of GMO foods in the country.

“Europe’s primary justification for refusing it is due to health reasons. They allegedly intended to conduct research. Which research will they carry out? We’ve turned it down. We must speak out against GMOs ” Raila said in the past while voicing his concerns over GMO foods.
