President Ruto offers scholarships to 100 Comoros students to attend Kenyan universities following an agreement with Pres Azali Assoumani.

President William Ruto has announced that the Kenyan government will provide scholarships to 100 students from the Union of the Comoros seeking to study in Kenya.

Ruto has also promised that Comorian students in Kenya will pay the same tuition costs as Kenyan students.

This comes after President Ruto and President Azali Assoumani of Comoros signed a General Cooperation Agreement on Thursday.

“Kwa heshima ya ndugu yangu rais wenu, serikali ya Kenya itawapatia scholarships 100 kwa watoto wa kutoka hapa Comoros. Na vile vile kwa sababu ya undugu na urafiki, na watu wa Comoros, vijana wenu wanafunzi wote wanaosomea Kenya watalipishwa kama vile wao ni Wakenya na sio wageni tena,” said Ruto.

President Ruto was speaking at the 48th Anniversary of Independence of the Union of Comoros where he was the Chief Guest on 6th July, 2023.

The Joint Commission for Cooperation between the two countries in areas like Trade and Investment, Transport, Education, Tourism, Agriculture, Blue Economy, and Maritime Security would be established as per the agreement reached by the two Heads of State.

At the same time, President Ruto pledged to eliminate the need for visas before the end of this year for anyone entering Kenya with a valid travel passport issued by the Union of Comoros.

President Azali also stated that the Comoros will no longer require visas from Kenyans, according to a Joint Communiqué that was released after a meeting between the two presidents.

“The free visa regime will improve people-to-people interaction and increase the volume of trade between Kenya and Comoros,” reads part of the statement.

Meanwhile, Comoros is expected to begin the process of joining the East African Community following talks between President Ruto and the island’s top leadership.
