President William Ruto is on a guaranteed path to securing a second term, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has said.

The speaker cited the Kenya Kwanza government’s bold infrastructure investments as the driving force behind the country’s rapid transformation, a record he said would guarantee President Ruto a second term.

Speaking during a Women Empowerment Programme in Teso North constituency in Busia county, Wetang’ula described infrastructure as a cornerstone of Ruto’s economic recovery strategy.

“Our people must continue supporting President William Ruto’s leadership. I encourage the youth to organise themselves in groups so they can benefit from the Nyota programme, which offers training and financial empowerment,” he said.

He commended the President for reducing fertiliser prices from Sh7,000 to Sh2,500, noting that the move had boosted maize production and led to a bumper harvest in Western Kenya.

Wetang’ula further stated that the economy had recorded steady growth under Ruto’s leadership, rising from 4.7 per cent last year to over 5.0 per cent in 2025.

“Women are at the heart of this growth. By equipping them with resources, skills, and opportunities, we not only uplift families but also drive inclusive and sustainable development across the country,” he said.

Defending the Kenya Kwanza administration’s tough policy decisions, Wetang’ula said only bold leadership could deliver meaningful change.

“This government made hard choices to rescue the economy. Stalled projects have been revived, and major road networks to open up the Western region have been budgeted for,” he said.

The speaker confirmed that funds have already been allocated in the current budget for the expansion and construction of the Malaba–Nairobi Dual highway, with works underway in Rironi.

“This project will ease the heavy truck congestion at the Malaba border and unlock the immense cross-border economic potential of the region,” he said.

Wetang’ula also highlighted efforts to streamline the issuance of IDs and passports to facilitate free movement and enhance trade along the Busia border.

“Past cases of harassment of traders by neighbouring countries are being addressed, with Uganda committing to fully adhere to the EAC Protocol,” he added.

The speaker commended President Ruto and his Ugandan counterpart, Yoweri Museveni, for advancing the East African Protocol, which he said would enhance trade and facilitate the seamless movement of people, goods, and services.

“This initiative will enable the people of Kenya and Uganda to interact freely, conduct business with ease, and coexist harmoniously,” he emphasised.

Calling for unity and political maturity, Wetang’ula urged leaders to shun divisive politics, ethnic rhetoric, and insults and instead rally behind a common national agenda.

Ugenya MP David Ochieng, who accompanied Wetang’ula, called on the Teso community to build strategic alliances across the country.

“As a country, we have made significant strides. We cannot sideline any community because of population size. We are one nation and must pursue unity of purpose,” he said.

Butere MP Tindi Mwale criticised recent remarks by former President Uhuru Kenyatta, asserting that the current broad-based government had revived the economy from near collapse.

“This country was in the ICU when we took over. President Ruto and Prime Cabinet Secretary Raila Odinga have done their best to restore economic stability,” he noted.
