Ruto responds to claim of being a clueless president
President Ruto has strongly dismissed assertions that he is an ill-equipped or uninformed leader, insisting that his extensive experience in governance and deep understanding of Kenya’s political and economic landscape make him well-suited to steer the country forward.
Speaking in Meru County on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, the Head of State asserted that his leadership credentials span decades, having worked under multiple administrations and held various senior government positions, making him highly knowledgeable about the intricacies of governance and the nation’s progress.
“I have served in government under President Moi as a legislator and as an assistant minister. I worked under President Kibaki as the Minister for Agriculture, where I diligently carried out my responsibilities. I also served under President Uhuru Kenyatta as Deputy President. I fully understand matters of governance in Kenya, and I know exactly what is required to move this country forward,” Ruto stated, exuding confidence in his leadership capabilities.
Ruto, who was greeted by throngs of enthusiastic crowds during the second day of his Mt Kenya tour, took the opportunity to assert that this was far from his inaugural visit to the county, emphasising that he had returned on numerous occasions.
He went on to elaborate that his connection to Meru stretched back to his time as a Member of Parliament and that he had also frequented the area during his tenure as a minister and later as a cabinet secretary.
“Let me tell you, my brothers and sisters of Meru, I am not a stranger here. I have been coming to this region since my days as a Member of Parliament, when I diligently served my people. I was here when I was a minister, and I continued to visit even when I was Deputy President,” Ruto said, stressing his long-standing connection with the county.
He then reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to the people of Meru, making it clear that he would not allow divisive individuals with ill intentions to sever the political and social ties he has nurtured over the years.
He maintained that his leadership was not about personal gain but rather about fostering development and unity for the benefit of all Kenyans, urging politicians to set aside unnecessary rivalries and focus on delivering for the people.

“The friendship I have built with the people of Meru and the larger Mount Kenya region is something I hold dearly, and I will not allow anyone without vision, anyone driven by hatred and malice, to come and destroy the relationship and leadership we have built over the years. We have done this not for the benefit of leaders but for the welfare of the citizens. There is no need for us, as leaders, to constantly compete with one another.”
Further, the President underscored that leadership contests should be confined strictly to elections, asserting that once the polls are concluded, leaders must shift their focus to serving the people rather than engaging in unnecessary political wrangles.
He maintained that the question of who will assume leadership in the future is not a matter for politicians to decide but rather a responsibility that rests squarely with the electorate when the 2027 elections arrive.
He insisted that the choice would be straightforward, as Kenyans will evaluate leaders based on the tangible work they have accomplished, ensuring that only those who have delivered on their promises will be entrusted with the mandate to continue leading.
‘Leadership contests should be confined to elections, and once those are over, we must return to serving the people. As for the question of who will lead in the future, that decision lies with you, the people, when the 2027 elections come. It will be a straightforward decision based on the work a leader has done. The one who delivers will be given the mandate to continue,” Ruto remarked.
