Ruto responds to Raila’s rating of his government for the first 100 days in power.

On Sunday, December 25, President William Ruto brushed down recent criticism of Kenya Kwanza’s performance in its first 100 days in government from the leader of the opposition, Raila Odinga.

Speaking at an interfaith Christmas ceremony at the Eldoret Sports Club in the county of Uasin Gishu, Ruto underlined that it was within the opposition’s rights to voice their opinions.

The Head of State insisted that the criticism would not stop him from carrying out the Kenya Kwanza agenda and freeing the country from its debt-related obligations.

Ruto asserted that his administration embarked on a mission to “build a new foundation for Kenya’s economy” and reduce the reliance on borrowing.

In addition, the President said that, despite the pressure put on him, his government will resist the need to borrow money to finance development initiatives.

“We have built our economy on the basis of debt and that is why we are paying Ksh1.4 trillion to service debts. We want to build our economy on the basis of revenue raised from our savings and tax to secure our independence,” Ruto stated.

However, Ruto acknowledged the value of opposition criticism in advancing democracy and national prosperity.

In an effort to strengthen their role in monitoring and giving checks to the current government, he further committed to supporting opposition politics.

“My happiness is that our country’s opposition is doing its work. The government is ready to work with the opposition long as every party plays its part to better our nation. Previously we saw the govt merge with the opposition which did more harm than good bringing drought and debts. It is okay when the opposition is venting on issues affecting Kenyans,” Ruto added.

His comments followed Odinga’s assessment of Ruto’s first 100 days in government as a “road to nowhere” based on what he claimed were unfulfilled promises.

In a statement released on December 22, Odinga listed the elimination of fuel subsidies and increases in education costs as examples of Kenyans being betrayed.

The ODM Leader assigned Ruto’s administration a score of four on a scale of ten to reflect his displeasure of his leadership.

“These have been 100 days on the road to nowhere. Kenyans are worse off than they were during the campaigns when UDA promises flowed,” Raila stated in a communique released on December 22.
