Ruto reveals in a “leaked audio” the day he almost slapped Uhuru
Ruto reveals in a “leaked audio” the day he almost slapped President Uhuru Kenyatta as their argument nearly turned physical.
Deputy President William Ruto has revealed in a “leaked audio” the day their argument with his boss President Uhuru Kenyatta almost turned confrontational.
The argument arose after the supreme court annulled the 2017 presidential election results by former Chief Justice David Maraga.
According to the Sunday Nation, the leaked audio was recorded on Friday, 1, June 2022 in a meeting held by Ruto with Kikuyu elders in Karen.
The revelations come almost five years later as the country heads to the general election next month.
The audio also sheds light on the tense hours following the unprecedented judgment by the Supreme Court to nullify the 2017 presidential results.
In the recording William Ruto is heard addressing elders revealing how he was reportedly locked in a heated argument with Uhuru Kenyatta, almost slapping him.
President Kenyatta nearly gave up the fight for a second term in office because he was so distraught by the Supreme Court decision ordering a repeat of the election, according to DP Ruto.
It was only because of Ruto’s insistence that Uhuru agreed to run again in the repeat election.

“So, ndiyo huyo… Oh, sasa, hii maneno, sijui nini, mimi sitaki, mimi nataki kuenda Ichaweri, sasa mimi sitaki, wacha tuachane na hii kitu,” Uhuru quoted to have said during the meeting in Sunday Nation.
It’s at this point Ruto says he became mad at Uhuru to a point of almost slapping him.
“Mimi nikamwangalia, nikamwambia ‘wewe’! Ni vile tu nilikua na heshima, ningemchapa kofi. Ati sisi tuache?”
Ruto claims to have convinced President Kenyatta that there was no way they could have lost the polls.
“Ati tutoke hapa?’ Hapana, hapana, hapana. Na ni kura tumeshinda? Kwani alikua ametushinda wapi? Tumeshinda wabunge, tumeshinda ma governor, tumeshinda senators wengi—tumefanya hiyo kazi yote.
The Deputy President further claims to have repeatedly asked President Kenyatta to take a “keen interest” to avoid being caught off-guard by an adverse judgment.
“I had told the president to take a keen interest… He assured me that he was in charge and everything was fine,” said DP Ruto. “In reality, the door had been left wide open and some people went in and spoilt everything. Isn’t that so?” he posed.
Ruto says he managed to convince Uhuru to participate in the repeat elections which were boycotted by NASA coalition leader, Raila Odinga.
After the State House meeting, Ruto says, he and Uhuru left State House and headed to the Burma market where the president hit the Supreme Court with the famous remark ‘we shall revisit’.
