Ruto seals deal with Ukraine President Zelensky on Unga supply, just a day after the Ukrainian Government announced plans to establish grain hubs in Africa.

President William Ruto on Thursday, January 12, held a conversation with Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelensky, on the establishment of grain hubs in Africa.

According to a statement by Zelenskyy, the discussion was centered on issues related to food security in Africa amid mounting worries about the country’s grain crisis.

“We discussed the GrainfromUkraine initiative, food security, and the creation of grain hubs in Africa. Agreed to enhance cooperation,” Zelenskyy stated.

The discussion took place the day after the Ukrainian government revealed its intentions to build grain hubs in Nigeria and other African nations.

As part of its attempts to strengthen relations with African countries, Ukraine pledged to provide the West African country with more than 25,000 tons of wheat grains.

Ukraine has continued to be a major producer and exporter of wheat and other food items despite the setbacks caused by the conflict with its neighbor, Russia.

The disruptions were, at some point, considered as one of the factors contributing to food inflation in Kenya and Africa by extension.

In the recent update from the government released on Wednesday, January 11, East Africa and Arid Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano stated that the situation was still grim with 22 counties still stuck in the shackles of famine.

Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi 2022 noted that the government was looking to leverage international partnerships in plans to achieve food security.

Further, Zelenskyy thanked Kenya for its support in matters of security during the concluded term as a member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

“Had a fruitful conversation with President William Ruto and thanked him for constructive cooperation in the UN, and support as a Security Council member. ,” the Ukrainian President stated.
