Ruto plans to meet Tiktok CEO over harmful and explicit content on the platform that has been deemed inappropriate for Kenyan audiences

Ruto plans to meet Tiktok CEO over harmful and explicit content on the platform that has been deemed inappropriate for Kenyan audiences.

President William Ruto stated on Wednesday that he will meet with TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew from around the world on August 24 due to concerns over the platform’s content.

Speaking in Nakuru during the Kenya Music Festival Winner’s State Concert, Ruto said he will discuss strategies with the executive that will enable the tech firm to moderate content on the platform.

“Tomorrow morning we are having that conversation with the global CEO of TikTok so that we can work out a way to moderate content on the platform,” Ruto stated.

This comes after Bridget Connect Consultancy petitions National Assembly (Parliament) to ban the social media platform TikTok in Kenya.

The social media network, according to the petitioner, encourages youth to engage in inappropriate behavior, hate speech, violence, and explicit sexual content.

He has also expressed concern that the site is not being properly regulated by the Communications Authority (CA) and that things are out of control.

In addition, Ruto revealed that the meeting will also address monetization to allow Kenyan content creators to earn from their talent.

The Head of State also revealed that he had agreed with other global social media giants such as YouTube and X to monetize Kenyan content for Kenyan creatives.

“We are now at 80 percent monetization, we are among the four countries in Africa that can monetize content on YouTube,” he stated.

Ruto also revealed he met with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg in 2022, and the two agreed to select 25 content creators to monetize their content on the platform.

“These platforms bring between Ksh300 million and Ksh500 million every month, so we are increasing the revenues as a country from this space,” he stated.
