The administration of President William Ruto has shown enthusiasm and made a few modifications from that of his predecessor, retired President Uhuru Kenyatta.

President Ruto has made reforms that affect many departments of the government and state departments since his inauguration on September 13.

Ruto’s departure from the militarization of government institutions, which seemed to have been a frequent occurrence under President Kenyatta’s reign, is one of the most significant takeaways from his first three months in office.

Ruto had pronounced his intentions to do away with the military in running state organs way back in the electioneering period in his frequent criticism against the deployment.

NMS exit

Even before the onset of his term in office, former Nairobi Metropolitan Services Boss General Mohamed Badi had made clear his intentions to let go of the management of activities at City Hall, ushering in a new era in Nairobi City County.

NMS, the body installed by President Uhuru to handle key functions and services to Nairobi residents, handed back the operations to the newly elected Governor Johson Sakaja in August.

Uhuru deployed NMS to carry out strategic projects in the city during his administration and was quoted as applauding military personnel for their assiduity and efficiency.

However, Ruto’s administration did not show intentions of extending NMS’ stay at the helm of operations in the city and instead threw its weight behind Governor Sakaja.

Reversal of KMC

The Kenya Meat Commission, which had previously been managed by the military under the Ministry of Defense, underwent modifications under Ruto’s administration.

The instructions that had put the Kenya Meat Commission under KDF supervision were reversed, according to an announcement made in November by Mithika Linturi, cabinet secretary for agriculture.

The CS did point out that his ministry would continue to engage with the military to restructure the commission and guide it toward profitability.

KWS Changes

On Tuesday, December 6, the government sent Kenya Wildlife Service boss John Migui Waweru on compulsory leave.

Waweru, a former senior military officer, was appointed in 2019 under President Uhuru in a decision that caused controversy.

Following the shift, Wildlife Secretary Dr. Erastus Kanga assumed leadership after attending the Principal Secretaries’ handover ceremony.

Waweru was appointed by Uhuru in 2019, which was a contentious decision that garnered criticism from all quarters.
