Cabinet issues new directive; to adhere to gender parity on hiring and promoting staff in public service.
On Tuesday, December 6, the cabinet of President William Ruto issued a directive requiring the public service to comply to the gender parity guideline when hiring new employees.
The cabinet explained the decision in a despatch to media outlets, saying it was made to achieve inclusive socioeconomic development.
While Kenya made excellent gains toward achieving gender equality and women’s empowerment, the executive continued, it was still a long way from meeting the necessary international criteria.
“In that regard, the nation’s apex policy organ adopted a policy that seeks to foster the contribution of all Kenyans to national development by integrating Gender Equality as a key ethos of the Public Service.
“Going forward, all recruitments and promotions within all the ranks of the public service shall uphold the Gender rule,” the statement read in part.
The cabinet also mandated that all state organizations and ministries make sure that all ministerial budgets are gender-responsive.
Ruto’s trustees rolled out plans in line with the execution of the president’s promise to create employment opportunities by attracting investors.
Accordingly, the cabinet gave its approval for the nation to organize three international conferences in the third quarter of the fiscal year 2022–2023
These include the 2023 Africa Youth Connect Conference, the Tripartite Free Trade Area Business Council Conference in February 2023, and the Africa Private Sector Alliance Conference in March 2023.
Ruto’s cabinet established that 4.35 million persons are still in need of humanitarian assistance and approved the upscaling of the drought responses.
On a long-term basis, the government set a target of increasing the national tree cover to 30 percent by 2030. Consequently, 15 million trees will be planted before the lapse of the timeline.
Effective immediately, a minimum of 200-500 trees will be planted in every event attended by the president, his deputy, CSs, and principal secretaries.
