Raila suffers a blow in his quest to retain the Nyanza region after more than 30 leaders join Ruto’s UDA party.

In an ongoing effort to win over a region that hardly supported him in the previous presidential elections, President William Ruto met with close to 31 leaders from Chief Raila Odinga’s region on Monday.

The leaders from all the counties of Luo Nyanza swore allegiance to the President in a gesture that was also intended to oppose the mass action appeal from Azimio.

The leaders from Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay, and Migori counties met the President and his Deputy, Rigathi Gachagua, at State House, Nairobi.

The delegation comprised former elected leaders including ex-governors Dr. Evans Kidero (Nairobi), Mr. Zachary Obado (Migori), Mr. Jack Ranguma (Kisumu), and former Senators Fred Outa (Kisumu) and Rose Nyamunga (Nominated).

Others were ex-members of the National Assembly such as Nicholas Gumbo (Rarieda), Martin Ogindo (Rangwe), John Pesa (Migori), Omondi Anyanga (Nyatike), Ken Nyagudi (Kisumu West), Mr. Otieno Otieno Mak’Onyango (Alego Usonga), Silvance Osele (Kasipul Kabondo) and Jack Opiyo (Awendo).

During the meeting, the leaders who were once staunch supporters of Raila revealed that they would support the government.

They argued that they were searching for advancing development projects for the Nyanza region, which would partly be achieved through close association with Kenya Kwanza.

To further weaken Raila’s influence in the region, the politicians vowed to continue mobilizing more people from Nyanza to join Kenya Kwanza.

While welcoming the defectors, President William Ruto noted that Nyanza would benefit from close coordination with the government.

“We now have the opportunity to do the right thing for the people of Nyanza and change the politics of the region to that of development,” he remarked.
