Government suspends eight KEBS (Kenya Bureau of Standards) officials over fake fertiliser scandal

In response to the counterfeit fertilizer scam, the government has suspended eight Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) officials.

Reports state that the eight KEBS officers were charged with certifying and awarding quality marks to two businesses connected to the fake fertilizer.

In an effort to get further insight into the situation, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have scheduled interrogations with other officials who are thought to have been involved in the scandal.

The Ministry of Agriculture issued an order that led to their interdiction and the suspension and seizure of counterfeit fertilizer that was being provided as part of the subsidy programme.

The ministry confirmed that fertilisers distributed by KEL Chemicals branded Kelphos Plus, Kelphos gold and NPK 10:26:10 did not meet all required test parameters.

According to the ministry, the affected consignment was distributed by KEL Chemical fertilizers between 5th and 10th March 2024.

“Following the release of test results by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS), the government has taken decisive action to safeguard the agricultural sector and farmers by announcing the immediate suspension of KEL Chemicals’ operations and seizure of its fertilizer products,” read the statement in part.

“The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development strongly advises farmers who have acquired or possess fertilizer from KEL Chemicals to immediately discontinue its use and to visit their nearest NCPB facility for further guidance,” it added.

The findings have also compelled Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi to change his tune as he had earlier denied reports of fake fertiliser.

CS Linturi called for speedy investigations into the saga which has since left farmers in fear.
