Scores of people are feared dead and several others critically injured after passenger bus accident at Nithi Bridge in Meru County on Sunday.

According to eyewitnesses, a bus ferrying passengers is reported to have experienced a brake failure leading to it veering off the road and overturning.

Reportedly, seven people are stated to have lost their lives in the accident, however, the police are yet to confirm the number.

Witnesses reported that the bus was heading from Maua to Nairobi when the incident occurred.

Several injuries have been reported with eyewitnesses reporting that the victims sustained serious injuries.

The victims have since been rushed to hospital and rescue efforts were ongoing by the time of publishing this article.

However, area residents thanked the Tharaka Nithi response teams for the quick intervention that saw them quickly rush to the scene and begin rescue operations.

The Nithi bridge which is located in Meru County has been labelled a blackspot over the number of accidents that have occurred in the section.

Residents and drivers who ply the route have since called for a reengineering of the area to avoid any future fatalities.

The accident comes less than 24 hours after another accident involving six trucks in Timboroa along the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway.

The 60-seater bus belonging to Eldoret Express rammed into a fuel tanker on the road.

Confirming the accident, Kikuyu Sub-County Police Commander Ronald Kirui said 10 others were critically injured and were admitted to hospital.

The bus headed to Nairobi from Nakuru hit the tanker which had parked by the road.

The fatalities’ bodies were booked into the P.C.E.A Thogoto Hospital morgue.

According to the police, flooding from the ongoing rains was a contributory factor to the accident.

Kirui called on the motorists to exercise care while plying the roads.
