James Wambugu, vicar-in-charge of ACK St Mark’s Gitugi church in Mathioya constituency, said they received calls on Saturday morning informing them that doors to the church had been opened.

“We rushed to the church to find that several monitors had been stolen,” Wambugu said, adding that the incident was one-of-a-kind.

The reverend, however, said they were all shocked when they checked CCTV images to find that the culprit had broken into the church premises without any clothes.

The images showed the man walking from one corner of the church to another as he attempted to open cabinets, presumably looking for money, before proceeding to uninstall the monitors from the walls.

“We have since forwarded CCTV recordings to the police and have been assured that investigations have commenced,” he said, saying they didn’t understand why he perpetrated the crime while naked.

He appealed to locals to be on the lookout for electronics being sold in the area without a confirmed source, saying they could be the ones stolen from the church.

Further, he said the church will be praying for the suspect as they await his apprehension.

“We want to condemn church vandalism in a strong manner. A church is a sacred area and should be respected as such,” he added.

The church hosted former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua accmpanied by other opposition leaders, last Sunday during a church service.

Churchgoer Agnes Ndoro said it was disturbing to see the suspect trotting across the pulpit while undressed.

The suspect, she noted, accessed the church through a window. The theft, she said, will affect the operations of the church, which is vast and relies on the monitors to ensure all members follow proceedings comfortably.

“The man accessed the church through a window that is on the pulpit. We’re praying for him, so that God can touch him and cause him to return the stolen items,” she said.
