Special request Chebukati made to church leaders before declaring Ruto President-Elect

Chebukati, the IEBC chair invited church leaders for prayer during tense moments at Bomas before declaring Ruto President-Elect

Chebukati, the IEBC chair invited church leaders for prayer during tense moments at Bomas before declaring Ruto President-Elect.

Anglican Archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit claims that IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati invited a group of religious leaders to his home hours before the official presidential results were declared on August 15.

On December 22, Sapit said in an interview with Citizen TV that Chebukati had asked them to see him for special prayers before they could travel to Bomas to declare presidential results.

As they were unaware of the location of the chairman’s residence, Sapit said they were taken aback by the request.

“As we headed to Bomas, the chair requested that we meet with him at home for prayers before he proceeded to Bomas.

“We consulted because we did not even know where he lived. We decided that if someone needed prayers, we needed to be with him,” the Archbishop narrated.

He added that when they arrived at Chebukati’s house, he was a disturbed man.

According to Sapit, the chairman was with his wife and daughter, who were both concerned.

However, he indicated that Chebukati did not disclose what was bothering him.

“He was very tense, he was walking across his sitting room. The wife and the daughter were in distress. We did not ask what was happening but we could see the agitation.

“We prayed and then he stated that we could go to Bomas together. He was in need of that prayer,” he stated.

Chebukati, later on, rode in the motorcade of religious leaders even as they got to Bomas some minutes close to 3pm before he presented the final results to the chief agents.

The Archbishop further hinted that they had a meeting with Juliana Cherera, the former vice chairman, and her group of three commissioners before they left Bomas.

“Close to 3pm they came and walked by us. They greeted us and walked away. To us we thought they were going to where the chairman was,” he stated.

The Kenyan Anglican bishop added that after the IEBC fallout, the religious leaders met with the two factions, however, none of the factions revealed what truly caused the difference between them.
