State opens probe on burial of “street children” in Nairobi
The Government has launched investigations into the recent burial of several individuals believed to be from street-connected families at Lang’ata Cemetery
The Government has launched investigations into the recent burial of several individuals believed to be from street-connected families at Lang’ata Cemetery in Nairobi, the Ministry of Gender, Culture and Children Services has said.
In a statement issued on Monday, February 2, 2026, Ministry of Gender Cabinet Secretary Hannah Wendot Cheptumo revealed that preliminary information indicates that nine bodies were released from City Mortuary and Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital Mortuary and buried on January 29, 2026 and the deceased are reported to have been male adults, with the exception of one infant.
According to the Ministry, the bodies had been held in the mortuaries for several months in 2025, and the burials were facilitated by well-wishers and community-based organisations.
Ms. Wendot maintains that her Ministry was not informed of the developments prior to the burials in Nairobi.
“At the time of the statement, no official post-mortem reports or verified medical documents have been availed to confirm the identities, causes of death, or circumstances surrounding the deaths of the individuals,” Ms Wendot said in her statement.
