Suspect in the murder of Kaspul MP Ong'ondo Were arrested in Nairobi
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) detectives have arrested a suspect linked to the brutal murder of Kasipul Member of Parliament Charles Were.
The suspect was arrested on Sunday, May 4 morning in Nairobi.
The sleuths also recovered a car that the suspect and his accomplices used to escape from the scene after gunning down Were.
The vehicle is reported to have been captured by security cameras near Parliament Building, City Hall Way, Wabera Street, Kenyatta Avenue, Jakaya Kikwete Road, Argwings Kodhek Road, and Valley Road, the same routes Were used before being killed.
The suspect in custody was also traced along all the routes the late MP used before he was shot.
Were was fatally shot on Wednesday, April 30, at a traffic light on Ngong Road near the City Mortuary roundabout.
The ODM MP, who was seated on the passenger’s side of his Toyota Crown car, was shot four times and was pronounced dead after he was rushed to Nairobi Hospital.
CCTV footage revealed that Were left the parliament buildings at around 7 p.m. on Wednesday and was accompanied by his driver and bodyguard.
Were’s car then stopped briefly in Wabera street and his bodyguard alighted, walked into an M-Pesa shop and deposited Ksh20,000 into the MP’s phone.
Security cameras captured a hooded man carrying a bag and monitoring the Kasipul MP’s vehicle.
The MP’s vehicle left Wabera Street at around 7:19 and headed towards Kenyatta Avenue before the driver changed route and joined Ralph Bunche Road to avoid traffic before joining Argwings Kodhek Road.
Were was then caught in a traffic snarl-up along Valley road, with the suspect who was seen monitoring them in Wabera street trailing them again on a sports bike.

The suspect then disembarked from the bike, walked up to the car, and fired four shots at close range before sprinting away from the scene.
An autopsy led by Chief Government Pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor is scheduled for Monday, May 5, 2025, to provide further insights into the cause of death of the ODM MP.
Were’s murder has caused tension among members of parliament and ODM leaders, with some calling for swift action from the security agencies.
Homabay Governor Gladys Wanga on Saturday said the ODM party did not agree to work with President William Ruto’s government, only for its members to be targeted by assassins.
“Who killed Kasipul MP Charles Were and why? That we want to know, and not in the far future, in the near future. We have said we are working together, but we did not sign up for the assassination of our members,” she said.
