  • Secret documents reveal how UK Govt orchestrated a smear campaign against Raila’s father Jaramogi

Secret documents reveal how UK Govt orchestrated a smear campaign against Raila’s father Jaramogi Oginga Odinga costing him power.

According to a report published by the Guardian on August 7th, Jaramogi, the Vice President, and President Jomo Kenyatta, the father of President Uhuru Kenyatta, later became estranged as a result of the three-year campaign.

The Information Research Department (IRD), the UK Foreign Office’s propaganda division, created the smear campaign.

The British favored Jomo at the time because they considered him as pro-European while portraying Odinga as a leader eager to cooperate with the communists.

One of the activities began in 1965 after there were allegations of leaflets coming from the People’s Front of East Africa being distributed.

Initially, the report which appeared in a UK publication seemed to side with the then DP.

It called the founding President a ‘reactionary, fascist and dishonest.’

However, the document, which received considerable local media attention, was intended to give the impression that Odinga was more willing to cooperate with both the Soviet Union and the Communist bloc.

“It clearly shows that Odinga was considered the main threat to British interests, and the lengths to which the British were willing to go in order to smear him,” Dr. Poppy Cullen, a historian, told the publication

The secret documents revealed that a year earlier, Odinga had reported that he was increasingly receiving poor coverage mostly in the British press, framed to appear as though he was making a plot to overthrow Mzee.

In 1964, another document surfaced painting Odinga as a tool for the Chinese, and more documents totaling 37 were released in just nine years.

During the attacks, Jomo was also said to have grown wary of his DP and accused him of planning a coup at some point but a raid at his home never revealed any evidence to that effect.

“Mr. Jaramongi Odinga and his associates may attempt some kind of armed or other action to seize power,” the documents attributed the quote to Jomo.

At the height of the propaganda, Odinga resigned and established his own party to compete with the ruling class’ chosen Kenya African National Union (KANU).

The Kenya People’s Union (KPU) party was swiftly disbanded, and its members were sent behind bars.

  • Four IEBC officials arrested in a secret meeting at a politician’s home

Four IEBC officials arrested on Sunday, August 7, after they were found holding a secret meeting at a parliamentary aspirant’s home in Homa Bay county.

Four Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) officials include a presiding officer, two deputy presiding officers, and a clerk.

The four had been recruited by the commission to man over Kwabwai and Kanyadoto wards.

Media reports indicated that the county residents got wind of the secret meeting and rushed to the politician’s home in order to disrupt the gathering.

The four IEBC officials were later frog-matched to the nearby police station.

However, Some election officials at the scene managed to escape from the house in due time before they were nabbed.

According to witnesses at the scene, the IEBC officials conspired with some of the candidates to win the election on Tuesday, August 9.

“I was tipped that the IEBC officials were striking a deal with the candidates to ensure that ballot papers are marked and stuffed into ballot boxes in their favour on the election day,” a witness told NTV

Ndhiwa sub-county police boss, Paul Rioba, affirmed that investigations were ongoing in order to establish the basis of the discussions.

He noted that the matter would be dealt with accordingly.

The news comes as Kenyans have been assured of a free, fair, and credible election period by IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati and his commissioners during a push to raise public awareness.

He stated that in order to efficiently oversee the elections, his commission had sent out enough employees, including presiding officers, deputies, and clerks.

  • Sky News, “Eyewitness” shows how much youths were paid to attend Raila, Ruto rallies (VIDEO)

Sky News, “Eyewitness” shows how much youths were paid to attend Raila, Ruto final rallies at the Kasarani and Nyayo Stadia respectively.

A report by Sky News dubbed “Eyewitness”, a news outlet based in the UK, revealed how youths were paid to attend final rallies presided over by Azimio flagbearer Raila Odinga and his UDA counterpart William Ruto on Saturday 6, August.

Sky News correspondent Yousra Elbagir trailed a group of four youths on Saturday, August 6, who attended both rallies.

In their UDA-branded t-shirts, the youths arrived at the Nyanyo stadium, with whistles in their mouths and Ruto’s posters in their hands.

However, they left the stadium shortly after and informed Elbagir that they had to be elsewhere.

“We are hustling. We were paid by political brokers between Ksh500 -1,000 to attend this rally,” stated Sylvester, the leader of the group.

The four left and headed towards Thika Road, where the Azimio rally was scheduled to take place. However, they alighted a kilometre away from the venue as a security measure.

Sylvester added that in order to prevent confrontation with Raila fans, they needed to remove the UDA-branded apparel at a safe distance from Kasarani.

He also disclosed how much they were paid to attend the rally.

“When you encounter an opposing side, you have to be very cautious. Everybody wants money; we were paid Ksh1,500 to attend this rally,” he narrated.

The youth stated that they were just trying to put food on their table owing to the biting economic situation in the country.

In addition, they reckoned that attendance in rallies did not relate to how they would vote.

“When you are offered money, you cannot refuse to take it but at the end of the day, we know where our passion and votes lie,” he stated.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) limited the campaigns to 48 hours before the August 9 general election, and Saturday, August 6, was the final campaign day.

  • Baba Na Mama Youth forum in Central commits to facilitate sick and elderly to vote for Raila Odinga

Baba Na Mama Youth forum in Central commits to facilitate sick and elderly to vote for Raila Odinga in the next week, Tuesday elections.

To help Raila Odinga, the presidential candidate for the Azimio party, garner more votes, central youth in the counties of Kiambu and Murang’a have volunteered to transport the elderly and sick to the polls.

The Baba na Mama Kiambu and Murang’a Youth Forum claimed to have organized enthusiastic young people in the area who will help disadvantaged voters, particularly those in distant locations, get to the polls on Tuesday.

“Our presidential candidate has gained immense support in Kiambu and Murang’a and the mountain region at large. We are his foot soldiers here and we will ensure that all of his votes are cast. We will help the sick and the elderly by taking them to the polling centers and back to their homes,” chairman of the group, Joseph Kamau alias Monjos, said.

He asserted they are taking no chances in order to increase the number of votes Raila and his running mate Martha Karua receive in the area with a high voter turnout.

The areas of Kiambu and Murang’a are typically thought of as Ruto’s strongholds, but the entry of Karua into the race for president in March as Raila’s running mate altered the dynamic.

On Saturday in Murang’a and Kiambu counties, the youths from the area spoke with a group of Mount Kenya musicians, including Peter Kigia, Ben Githae, Gachathi wa Thuo, Regina Muthoga, and Zachary Wandaro.

They said they have been following President Uhuru Kenyatta’s guidance in shaping the region’s political path.

“President Uhuru is our leader and political kingpin and that is why we heeded to his call to support Raila Odinga. We are certain that under Raila’s presidency, all projects including roads that have been initiated by Uhuru in this region will be completed,” Kamau said.

“We trust that Raila will further streamline the coffee, tea, avocado and milk sectors that are being reformed by the President,” he added.

The chairman called on Mt Kenya residents to turn up in large numbers and participate in their lawful right of electing their leaders on Tuesday.

“We are urging residents and all candidates to maintain peace because the elections will come and go. We must continue living in harmony even if those who we support win or fail to clinch the seats they are looking for. Let’s do this for the sake of our families, friends, and businesses,” Kamau told residents at Kagundu-ini in Kandara constituency.

In his speech at Nyayo Stadium on Saturday, August 9, Ruto urged Raila Odinga to accept defeat in the event he loses.
