Gen Zs attend a memorial concert at Uhuru Park in honour of victims of police brutality during anti-government protests, as Kenyans mark Saba Saba Day.

Hundreds of Kenyans gathered at Uhuru Park in Nairobi for the Shujaaz Memorial Concert organized to honour 41 Kenyans who lost their lives during the anti-government protests.

The date coincides with the 1990 Saba Saba uprising that led to the country’s second liberation, and the event will be used to reflect on Kenya’s history.

According to activist Boniface Mwangi, who played a key role in planning the event, about 30 artists, including Juliani, Octopizzo, Eric Wainaina, Khaligraph Jones and Trio Mio performed in the event.

“Kenyans are the organisers of this event. We want to celebrate the sacrifice of those killed by the police,” said Boniface, adding, “The struggle continues. This is a fight for liberation from the lords of poverty and leaders who take advantage of the Kenyan people.”

In addition, crosses bearing the names of those who have died since the start of the protests have been erected at Uhuru Park grounds by some of the attendees.

The Shujaaz memorial concert, which coincides with the historical Saba Saba day—a commemoration of July 7, 1990 protests that agitated for multi-party democracy—was the culmination of protests that had been ongoing for three weeks.

The protesters, the majority of whom are disenfranchised Kenyan youth, have demanded that the government take action against runway corruption, unchecked spending, and an overhaul of Kenya’s parliament.

While the state claims that 25 people have been killed and 400 have been injured, rights groups believe the numbers are higher.

According to the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC), at least 43 people were killed during the demonstrations, and over 600 were injured in varying degrees.
