Uhuru given ultimatum to surrender guns

Government orders Former President Uhuru Kenyatta surrender guns to the Head of Firearms Licensing board

Government orders Former President Uhuru Kenyatta surrender guns to the Head of Firearms Licensing board.

The former president’s family and close friends have been given till Monday, July 24, to turn in any registered firearms to Karen Police Station.

According to the authorities, the family has 28 registered firearms, which they now want to have ballistic testing done on to see if they were used in the three-day Azimio la Umoja mass protests.

Speaking on Sunday, Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale said the family should surrender the firearms to the Head of Firearms Licensing board as directed without fail.

He added that the government will not hesitate to take action against Former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s family if they fail to surrender their firearms.

“Even if you continue crying out about your children and mother, we don’t care about that, the law will catch up with you. Look for the Head of Licensing Board boss Rashid Yakub and return all the guns to him,” he said.

Duale went ahead to warn the retired president on the claims that he has been funding the protests led by the opposition.

“If you (Uhuru Kenyatta) together with your family continue funding the anti-government protests and keeping the guns, you are going against the law,” he said.

This comes after the police raided the home of the former president’s son Jomo Kenyatta in search of guns that State claims are illegally registered and have been used in the recent wave of protests.

The Interior Ministry has not stated what could happen to the family if they fail to surrender the firearm.

Meanwhile, Uhuru has questioned the government’s motive in targeting his family and calling out his name despite having retired and handed over power peacefully.

“If I am the problem, just come for me. My silence doesn’t imply fear. Come directly for me. Why involve my mother or my son in whatever is happening? Is it a crime for me to associate with Raila?” He posed.
