Ruto accuses tax evaders in the Uhuru regime of sponsoring Raila's protest to sabotage his administration

Ruto accuses tax evaders in the Uhuru regime of sponsoring Raila’s protest to sabotage his administration.

President William Ruto alleged that unnamed individuals who were keen in tax evasion were funding opposition protest demonstrations.

This is after the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party has vowed to continue holding nationwide protests in response to the contested 2022 election.

The Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party has vowed to continue holding nationwide protests in response to the contested 2022 election.

Ruto claimed the ongoing protests by the opposition were being sponsored by wealthy individuals in the past regimes keen to evade paying tax.

However, the president declared that every citizen must honour their tax obligations, adding that Kenya is not an animal farm where some animals are more equal than others.

“Even if they sponsor demonstrations so that they don’t pay tax, I want to promise them that they will pay tax. There are no more exemptions. This country is not an animal farm, where some are more equal than others.”

“We are going to have a society where every citizen carries their fair share of our [tax] burden. I am not talking about additional taxes [but] taxes that have been agreed upon by Parliament and signed into law,” President Ruto told MPs in Mombasa yesterday.

In addition, Ruto’s allies in the Mt Kenya region now want the national government to look into tax waivers enjoyed by the Kenyatta family during former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s reign.

The lawmakers urged President William Ruto to order an audit into the tax waivers allegedly enjoyed by the former Head of State since ascending into office.

Senators John Methu (Nyandarua), James Murango (Kirinyaga), Wahome Wamatinga (Nyeri), and Tabitha Mutinda (nominated) accused Uhuru Kenyatta of sponsoring Azimio’s rally to sabotage Ruto’s revenue plan.

“He was given waivers for the taxes for the last ten years. We are doing an audit report and we will place it on the floor of the house and he must pay that,” Nyeri senator Wamatinga stated.

Besides auditing his wealth, Kirinyaga’s Murango called on county governments to establish whether the former President dully paid his land rates.

“Kayole residents are remitting their land rates but the rich are not paying,” he claimed.
