The National Council of Elders chairman, Kungu Muigai urges President William Ruto’s government to demonstrate accountability with taxpayer money.

In a statement, the National Council of Elders led by Kungu Muigai are requesting that the General Auditor release a 15-year-old audit report detailing Kenya’s national debt situation as a means of promoting transparency.

“When the Kenya Kwanza government took office, they claimed the coffers were empty. We want to know just how empty they were and what actions have been taken since,” Muigai stated.

“We also want a clear account of how the debts were acquired, how the funds were utilized, and what the current balance is.”

In addition, the elders are calling for a comprehensive lifestyle audit of all elected and appointed officials, to enable citizens to understand how public money is being spent.

“It’s unacceptable for officials who have been in office for less than two years to own choppers and luxurious houses abroad,” Muigai added.

“Kenyans are not against paying taxes; they just want assurance that their taxes are being used properly. They expect their contributions to ensure services like healthcare, not to line the pockets of a few.”

The elders have also expressed their support for the ongoing Generation-Z anti-tax protests.

However, the Nairobi Business Community has strongly condemned these protests, stating that they have severely impacted businesses.

Led by Wilfred Kamau, the group claims that the peaceful demonstrations have been hijacked by criminal elements.

“It is tragic that peaceful protests have turned violent. Properties worth millions have been looted and some destroyed by fire. This is unacceptable,” Kamau said. He also criticised the police for failing to protect property, adding, “The chaos in Downtown was caused by criminals. The government must take decisive action against such individuals.”
