Uneducated; President Ruto takes a swipe at Gachagua

President Willia Ruto has advanced an indirect offensive on his former deputy, Rigathi Gachagua, accusing him of being uneducated.

Speaking during the Waalimu Na Rais Forum at State House, Nairobi on Saturday, September 13, the president noted that he was bound to fail due to an unlearned deputy.

The head of state had hosted teachers to deliberate on their welfare when he took the dig at Gachagua.

While addressing the teachers, Ruto heaped praise on his current deputy, Professor Kithure Kindiki, lauding his intelligence and know-how.

“If you want to succeed, look for a more educated deputy than you. You put people around you who are more intelligent than you. When they help you shine, you take the credit while they do the work. I had another one who kept complaining that he was not learned, and then I realised he was going to fail me,” Ruto said.

But even as Ruto took the jibe at Gachagua, the latter never shied away from admitting his lack of proper education.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science and Literature from the University of Nairobi (UoN).

At every opportunity he got, he castigated himself for not being more educated than his boss.

At one point, he expressed his wish to enrol for a master’s degree to upgrade his academic credentials.

Besides Gachagua’s academic standing, Ruto had also taken an issue with his competence and delivery of his mandate.

The president is on record decrying working as a loner despite having a deputy who should have been his principal assistant.

Ruto lamented being left alone to sell the government’s agenda while Gachagua got caught up in apparent ethnic politics.

He said he had lacked someone to meticulously defend the government and explain its workings to the common citizenry.

He now says Kindiki fits the bill and is the perfect man for the job, owing to his astuteness and ability to communicate with the masses.

Gachagua is currently fixated on the mission to unseat Ruto in 2027.

Despite having been friends and elected jointly in 2022, Ruto and Gachagua fell out in their second year in power, a fallout that culminated in the latter’s impeachment last October.
